Year 11 Revision: Science in Jekyll & Hyde

The theme of Science in Jekyll and Hyde is a significant one.  You need to consider:

  • The laboratory as a setting for part of the novel
  • Jekyll’s goals as a scientist and pioneer, and how this reflects scientific discovery at the time
  • The conflict in ideas between Jekyll and Lanyon
  • The relationship between Science and Religion at the time (Victorian era), and the tension in the novella between reason and the supernatural
  • Darwin’s theory of evolution and how this fits with Stevenson’s portrayal of Hyde’s character
  • Jekyll and Hyde as a Gothic text (see also Frankenstein), but one which explores scientific discovery
